Copyright
How does copyright work?
Copyright is a legal framework that grants creators of original works exclusive rights to use and distribute their creations.
In other words copyright is a law that protects the work of others.
This means that you cannot use others’ content without their permission, as well as others cannot use your content without your permission.
Examples of copyright protected content:
- Pictures
- Videos
- Music
- Writing
- Content in general
How do I avoid copyright?
To avoid copyright infringement of others’ content, you should:
- Use your own content (use your own pictures).
- Ask for permission if you want to use others’ content (ask / pay the owner).
- Find Creative Commons-licensed content (Creative Commons (CC) allows you to use content with certain conditions).
- Always check others’ content for copyright (the licensing terms on the website / the creator has explicitly granted permission).
Protecting your own work:
- Good news: copyright is automatic! The moment you create an original work and fix it in a tangible form (e.g. write it down, record it, or publish it), you own the copyright.
- You don’t need to do anything extra to have copyright, but additional steps can strengthen your protection.
- Add a copyright notice to your work to make others aware that it’s protected (example: © [Your Name/Business Name] [Year]. All rights reserved.).
- Use watermarks for your content.
